Aim of this article is in the interest of general public so that they know what to do in case their Resident permit expires when outside Norway. I am sharing this to reduce your stress and share some tips on what to do in order to be able to reach back Norway. This article is applicable only to those who hold a temporary (1,2 or 3 years) of Resident permit.
In general plan your travel well. With that we mean do take care of your Resident permit and its renewal period and do apply for a renewal in time.
However, things may happen and while you travel outside Norway your Resident permit expires. Now normally the procedure is; to apply for a renewal of your Resident permit. This can again take an unguaranteed waiting time for your application to process. Not to worry. UDI is always there to help.
- Requesting UDI for an Entry VISA (D-VISA)
D-VISA is an entry VISA for one time entry into Norway, remember this is only in special or considerable circumstances. DO NOT misuse the opportunity.
You can simply write a mail to UDI explaining your situation and request to grant yourself an entry VISA so you can get into Norway even when you have an expired resident permit. As a general rule within 7 days report to the police and get the Resident permit renewal procedure completed.
For a faster response, its recommended to call UDI (check contact details at UDI.no) on phone and request. Not to forget, be humble explain them the reason you could not travel back in good time and they will help you out.
UDI will then inform the Royal Norwegian Embassy and they will get in touch with you with further instructions at your Email as registered against your Norwegian personal number. To be sure validate the email address with UDI beforehand.
- Appointment from VFS, only VISA STAMPING
Now that you don’t fell into paying unnecessary, this step is FREE. Yes, no appointment or VISA stampting fee. You just have to select the category of application as Resident Permit, Long term, and then Select VISA STAMPING.
Make sure to carry 1 photograph which is suitable for VISA purposes.
